We’re trying to move on from feeding our dogs only dry kibble. Both girls started out their lives that way, and it wasn’t until I started blogging that I learned there was so much more. We still feed what we feel is very good quality kibble, but now we add things to it to make it more attractive to the crew; and more importantly, even healthier.

Sheba’s appetite has waned some due to her cancer, so it’s vital that we keep her food new and hopefully a bit exciting for her. It’s important to keep our senior girls healthy, but the choices we make now will have the longest-term effects on Luke at only three years old. I hope that the knowledge and opportunities I gain now as a blogger will lead to a longer and healthier life for him as well as his sisters.
For now, I like to keep their base of quality kibble so that I don’t make big changes that might not agree with their digestion. That makes it easier to try different things to see what they like; not that they are picky, other than Sheba right now. But I can see some additional gusto at meal time when we step things up.
Luke and Cricket are both very active and they need extra nutrition to keep those energy levels up. As we try to keep Sheba feeling as good as possible and to keep her strength up, we need to keep adding things to her food. I don’t always have the time or ambition to make homemade food toppers, but there are great choices out there so that I don’t have to.
One of those we got the opportunity to try recently was TruDog. Though I don’t see us ever switching over completely to a raw diet, I am very willing to try some of the different options to add a little bit of that type of nutrition while adding some variety to the crews’ meals. There are a lot of benefits to raw food that I do not discount.
Tru-Dog’s Boost Me freeze-dried super boost is perfect for what we’re doing. It couldn’t be any easier – all you do is top their food with one tablespoon per cup of food. Since we add other nutritional supplements as well, this is just one more small step, and the raw aroma seems to be very attractive to them. It certainly gets Sheba eating.
The benefits to Boost Me include:
- It enhances nutritional absorption,
- Increases energy and vitality,
- Reduces allergies and itchy skin,
- And helps to boost the immune system.
It can be added to wet or dry food. I love that the beef for this food is born and raised in the USA. It is high quality, free range, grass fed beef, and the food is produced in a USDA certified and inspected facility. It’s free of anything artificial and is 99% real meat, vital organs, and meaty bone.
The company was started by Lori Taylor after she lost her own dog Truman to cancer. She wanted all dogs and their families to have access to the natural food they need. Their products include a complete raw diet, along with the Boost, treats, vitamins and other supplements, as well as ear and dental care.
We received two dental care products to try: Gel Me and Spray Me. Both products are made with natural and holistic ingredients, which is always my preference. The crew wants nothing to do with having their teeth brushed, and other dental products I’ve tried just had too many chemical-sounding ingredients for me.
Both products are easy to use since after applying, the ingredients bond with the dogs’ saliva to coat their entire mouths. The gel gets rubbed along their tooth and gum line, and the spray just needs one application on each side of the mouth. Daily use is needed and it takes time to see results so we don’t have those to share with you yet. This crew is fussy about having anything done to them, so we have to take things slowly, especially with Luke. So far they are very tolerant of the spray especially, even Luke, so I have high hopes!
Would you like the opportunity to try the same products we did? You can enter our giveaway to win the same sample pack we tried. Just fill out the widget at the end of this post.
Don’t want to wait to win? TruDog is having a huge sale right now so it would be a great time to order some for your pets. We also received a small bag of Treat Me Gourmet Gobbler Crunch Delight, and those were a huge hit with Luke when I used them for taking our posed photos for this review. By the way, their SuperFood comes in beef and turkey and their treats in several different proteins, all from USA raised and harvested meat and fish. We feel like that is the next best thing to raising your own, and even though we dream of having a small farm one day, it’s unlikely we’ll ever go that far. We’ll be starting with raising chickens for eggs only, and we’re all excited about that.
