Today is National Mutt Day, a day that is celebrated two times per year and was created to help raise awareness of all the mutts in shelters looking for homes. We are celebrating since we have our very own mutt in the family. We don’t discriminate around here, we have purebreds as well, and we think every dog deserves a good home, no matter what’s in their genes.
The fun thing about having a mutt is that sometimes you just don’t know what to expect. We had Luke’s DNA tested and the results yielded that he is a Labrador Retriever, Pomeranian, Miniature Wirehaired Dachshund mix on one side of his family, and a mix of many other breeds on the other! It’s not what we expected but he does show traits of each of these breeds. He of course looks like a Lab, loves water, and he has the energy, intelligence, and loyalty of one. Pomeranians are known for being active, enjoying agility, and responding to rewards based training. Dachshunds are scent hounds, and Luke certainly has a hound dog nose (we hope to take him to nose work classes).
Not to mention how lovable and fun he is, and what a handsome model he makes:
How can you celebrate National Mutt Day? You could visit your local shelter and adopt a mutt! If that’s not possible you could also volunteer some time, make a small donation, or just spend a special day with your own mutt.
We will be celebrating Luke and his versatility, and he’ll get these special treats this weekend:
