Our beagle Cricket takes her walks very seriously. Since we don’t walk daily, both she and her brother Luke get quite excited when they see their harnesses and leashes come out. Luke will sometimes do a nice sit and stay for me, but Cricket just can’t stop wiggling. Getting the harness and leash on is always a challenge, especially since I have issues with flexibility in my hands (mild arthritis and trigger fingers).
That’s the main reason I was excited to try the nifti SafeLatch pet safety leash. It is magnetized to grab the D-ring on a collar or harness, to make attachment easy. But when we received ours, I was pleased to find there was much more to it than just that.

Not only is attachment and removal simple, but it has safety features that help you know your dog is securely attached to that leash, with no fears of it accidentally coming off (I’ve had that happen with a dirty latch that did not close completely).
The thumb shape level is easy to operate, and the bolt slips inside a hook pocket, it doesn’t just rest on the other end. You can see how on some of my older leashes below that can become an issue, in time they stop lining up right. You can also see how much heavier duty the SafeLatch is.
In addition, that magnet holds the D-ring in place. You can know that it’s on securely by the snap it makes when you latch it. Watch my short video below to see exactly what I mean. I shot that video myself with phone in one hand and leash in the other. Trust me, with my hand issues doing things one handed is often impossible. I can even operate the latch with my non-dominant left hand, and when wearing gloves!
Another feature I like is the additional D-ring attached at the handle. You can use this for keys or doggy bags. I like to use it when hanging the leash on a hook (all of our leashes are stored in our entryway hanging on hooks). With my other leashes, I can only hang the handle, and it’s so annoying when the latch on the other end crashes onto our tile floor when I let go of it (Luke doesn’t like that loud noise either).
Nifti SafeLatch pet safety leash comes in a choice of five colors, which Luke shows you to the left.
Getting out the door is so much easier now, and we can feel safe and secure and just enjoy our walks. With two reactive dogs to keep calm when out there, I have enough to worry about, so knowing they are even more secure with this leash helps me to relax a bit.
I thought it would be fun to show some snippets of a typical walk with our beagle Cricket. I love how she trucks along like a dog on a mission when we walk (the opposite of Luke who smells everything and just wants to eat grass!). Now that she’s older she doesn’t pull quite as much, but she does put pressure on that latch!
