I love taking both dogs for a walk, even though they can be challenging, with Cricket’s constant stopping to smell, and Luke wanting to pull when his sister wants to stop. I don’t like leaving Cricket behind, but some days it’s just what I need.
Yesterday was one of those days. The Dadz was home so he played ball early with the dogs; Cricket got her fun and exercise in, so I didn’t feel so bad leaving her behind to just take Luke. My hubby was headed to the dump anyway, and said he would take Cricket along. Usually Luke goes with Dadz but lately he hasn’t been too excited about getting in the truck (we’re not sure why). Cricket doesn’t love to ride either, but we still try to take her from time to time so that every time she gets in a vehicle she’s not headed for the vet.
So, with no guilt to deal with, Luke and I had a pretty much perfect walk. It didn’t hurt that the temperature was above freezing, the sun was shining, and we didn’t have to put on all our layers before heading out the door.
Taking Luke on a solo walk means he can choose his own pace, and I let him choose the way to go some of the time too. He knows the trails well, even knowing where we need to veer off and go back to avoid fallen trees that Cricket can’t usually navigate. If he goes off trail to smell something, he gets back on it.
This day, the deer had obviously also been enjoying the bit of warmer weather also, but with only one dog to watch, I could (mostly) keep Luke out of their droppings. I had a bag of treats, so we could also work on training (not having to wear gloves is a big help with that!). For some reason, he just seems to walk more nicely when his sister isn’t with us.
On the other hand, she also walks nicely when it’s just her. Maybe it’s me – and I can only handle one of my crazy dogs at a time! It’s those noses…while Luke is a Lab mix, we will never believe he doesn’t have beagle in him, or some scent hound breed (his DNA test said Dachshund!).
We looped around and back on our trails, and I didn’t spend nearly as much time sputtering as I often do. I was thankful to have a relaxing walk for a change, but that doesn’t mean Cricket won’t be coming next time. I’m sure mother nature won’t be giving us another day so nice for a while; I’m just glad Luke and I were able to get out and enjoy this perfect day together.
