It’s a rainy Sunday here in New Hampshire, which seems appropriate, all things considered. Our big baby boy, Moses, is very ill. Yes, he is 8 years old, going on 9, but he is still our big baby boy.
Moses had stopped eating, and when we took him to our veterinarian yesterday, he found a very large tumor on his spleen. It was a difficult morning, because the outlook was grim at first….but after x-rays and blood work, things looked a little more optimistic. The hope is that the tumor is benign and contained, and that surgery will remove it and after recovery, Moses will be back to his old self. All his vital signs are good and the blood work was also good, so that is promising. Tomorrow he will go in for his surgery. Best case scenario is that the surgery goes well, the tumor is removed, and he will recover completely. The worst case scenario is that the tumor has spread beyond his spleen, in which case he will not be brought back to consciousness. We are trying not to think about that.
In the meantime he is happy to be at home this weekend. We are keeping him quiet and giving him lots of love and special little treats. We feel encouraged by the fact that he is drinking plenty of water and eating a little bit (because the tumor is pressing against his stomach he does not feel very hungry). He even got up and went to the door when his sisters had the ball! He hasn’t done that for 3 days now, so we are going to take that as a good sign. All his bodily functions are fairly normal He is uncomfortable but does not seem to be in a lot of pain. If we thought he was we would have had the surgery done immediately. Our vet is also on call and available should he take a turn for the worse.
His sisters are keeping him company:
Apparently this type of tumor is very common in Golden Retrievers and a few other breeds. Our vet has done this type of surgery many times, with many good outcomes, so we are confident he will be in good hands.
We are trying to stay positive, but obviously we are very scared and worried. Whether you believe in the power of prayer, or just the power of positive thoughts, vibes, and love, I just ask that you please send much of that Moses’ way.
