As summer winds down and autumn approaches, we can’t help but reflect on the kind of summer it was (or wasn’t, as the case may be). We had a cool and wet summer, and it did not turn out well for our vegetable garden, which was disappointing. We hope to harvest at least a bit more, but the shortening days are really slowing things down a lot. One thing that was a bright spot though, was our flower gardens. They do not seem to be as picky about the weather, and perhaps they even preferred all the rain. I thought we would share a few more of our favorites over these next few Flower Fridays.
Last year I saw another different flower to me at our new home, and had to get help to identify it. It turned out it was phlox – a flower I am actually familiar with. Only I thought phlox only came as a spring ground cover, so when these tall flowers bloomed later in the summer I did not recognize them.
I also forgot over the year how late they came, and at first I thought they weren’t coming back this year. They just wait a little later, and started blooming in early August. They really outdid themselves and I think there were many more than last year.
I love their sweet smell and often cut some to bring in the house. I enjoy the different purples, pinks, and whites that the phlox come in, and they blend in beautifully with everything else in the garden too.
They are just starting to fade now, but I can’t wait to see if they come in even stronger and thicker next year (and promised my sister she could dig some to take to her house too). I had to stop bringing them in the house anyway, because Luke seemed to be having some sort of allergy issue, so we wanted to eliminate anything that might be aggravating him (he’s doing better now, but we still don’t know what brought it on). We’ll be missing these beautiful colors as fall approaches and it all fades away, but it always gives us something to look forward to for next year!
We are happy to once again join the Flower Friday blog hop hosted by Da DB Boyz!
