Our quest for a new dog food, or at least something different to add to the crew’s kibble, continues. We were contacted by Grandma Lucy’s about trying some of their food and treats. We had read good things about them on our friend’s 2 Brown Dogs Blog and knew we wanted to give it a try.

I had been immediately attracted by the name. Who doesn’t love a reference to Grandmas? But for me it was the name Lucy that held the most appeal. You might not know that I did not grow up with dogs, and that the only dog I had as a child was a stuffed dog named Lucy.
Lucy lived with me until I was well into my 20’s, but she was in pretty rough shape by then! The Lucy in Grandma Lucy’s is a real dog! This company is family owned since 1999 and it was named after their very own dog Lucy, an 11 year old English cocker spaniel. Lucy had become picky and developed allergies so needed healthy food and treats. The family started making their own homemade and a business was born.
“Family owned” also speaks to me, along with these highlights of their food and treats:
- Proudly made in the USA and Canada.
- Highest quality USDA inspected and approved ingredients.
- All natural, GMO-free, with no added hormones, by-products, or preservatives.
- Antibiotic free meats and human grade ingredients.
- All food and most treats are grain-free, with the only exception being their Organic Baked Treats (we’re not strictly grain free in our household so that is fine with us).
- Zero recalls in 16 years!
- Giving back to pets in need through #ProjectPetRak, pet-related Random Act of Kindness (click here to read more).
This is all well and good to make me happy! My feelings aside, it’s what the crew thinks that really matters. In the interest of full disclosure I must mention that my crew isn’t all that picky. However, many of you know that we recently lost our golden retriever Sheba to cancer.
Sheba’s appetite was increasingly waning over her last few weeks with us. She wouldn’t eat much, especially towards the end. You could probably count on one hand the things she would eat, and the Grandma Lucy’s Coconut Organic Baked Treats were one of those things. You can see in the photo below how her eyes lit up when she was about to eat one of these treats. She was also getting tired, so many times she didn’t want to get up for treats; we had to bring it to her. But you can see here, she was happy to get up and get some Grandma Lucy’s.
That made me happy. She liked the Fish Treats we received too, but it was those cute little bears that really thrilled her! Cricket shows you below what the Freeze-Dried Ocean White Fish treats look like. They look – and smell – like real fish (because it is – pollock is the only ingredient)! Guess what? These treats are for cats as well, and Samantha – who IS extremely picky as you know – loves them! I just had to break them into smaller pieces for her, which was easy to do.
We also received several samples of the freeze-dried foods that Grandma Lucy’s offers. Each sample size packet was perfect to let both Cricket and Luke try some on top of their regular kibble, and they gobbled it up. Each food, and there are several different lines to choose from, impressed me with its ingredients, but the Macanna seems especially healthy for senior dogs like Cricket, with these superfoods:
- Hemp hearts – for reducing joint pain
- Coconut – for improving skin and coat
- Kale – a healthy antioxidant (I grow kale in my own garden, mostly for the dogs)
- Turmeric – for reducing inflammation
All you do is add water to these foods and they are ready to go in 5 minutes. We plan to add these to our regular lineup of foods.
Their freeze-dried foods have many unique proteins to choose from as well, such as goat, rabbit, salmon, and venison. This can be very important to those who have dogs with allergies, or like us, are doing our best to avoid them ever developing any.
Grandma Lucy’s and the crew at Wag ‘n Woof Pets would like you to have a chance to try some of their foods as well! One lucky reader who fills out the widget below will receive their choice of Organic Oven Baked Treats, along with an assortment of freeze dried samples.
