I have been on the quest for a healthier lifestyle for years now. Not only do my hubby and I try to be more active, but this also means that we try to eat more whole, fresh, natural foods. We rarely eat any meals that come out of a box or that are considered “processed” foods. I cook more from scratch.

It stands to reason that this lifestyle change would eventually make its way to our dogs as well. Over the last few years, we’ve tried to get away from cheap, dry, processed foods and to move to higher quality brands and add some freeze-dried and other variety to their diets. When our golden retriever, Sheba, was diagnosed with cancer, our third dog and sixth pet to have this awful disease, it became even more urgent to do so.
We opted to forego conventional treatments for Sheba, other than surgeries to remove the sarcomas, and chose more natural ways to fight it. That included healthier foods and I started cooking some homemade meal toppers with fresh ingredients for her and her siblings. The almost two years she was with us after her first diagnosis I think are a testament to the benefits of healthy, natural living.
Once Sheba was gone I wanted to continue with the same plan. However, the lack of the motivation of helping her fight that cancer left me slacking off in that department. While higher quality foods and different types of toppers were of benefit, I was still left wanting more for them. I want Cricket and Luke to have strong immune systems so that hopefully cancer will never enter their lives at all.
While I would still sometimes find time to cook for them, spring brought a lot of changes to our lives that made it more and more difficult to do so. We started our organic farm, another step towards that healthier lifestyle goal. Gardens had to be planted, we got our first chickens, and then I had my mini vacation to South Carolina for the BlogPaws conference planned.
The timing of that turned out to be perfect. As we sat down to breakfast one morning at the conference, conversation started around the table with new people we were meeting. One of those people was a representative for the pet food company NomNomNow, and as he told us about their business, I knew they were exactly what I’d been looking for.
Headquartered in Oakland, California since 2015, NomNomNow delivers healthy dog food right to your doorstep. This food is cooked and delivered fresh in individual packages that are the perfect portion size for your dog. The recipes are veterinarian formulated by nutritionist Dr. Justin Shmalberg.
My interest was piqued and we continued communication after the conference. Fast forward to last week when our first meals were delivered just as promised. All I had to do to get to that point was fill out a simple form online with all my information, and then with Luke and Cricket’s details as well. It took no time at all. Providing their ages, weights, and activity levels made it possible for NomNomNow to send us the correct caloric requirements for each.
E-mail confirmations and welcomes were quick to arrive in my inbox. I was given contact information, an overview of exactly how it would work, and access to a booklet to download with all the information I needed (that booklet is also included with your first delivery). I had a question, and I received a response within a short matter of time via email.
Our food arrived exactly when promised, packaged in completely recyclable materials (no Styrofoam coolers here!), and still cold. There was ice remaining in the freezer packs enclosed with the food, so we know it arrived to us with plenty of time to still stay fresh, even if we hadn’t been home to receive it.
There was a lot of excitement around the house at the time, and it wasn’t just from the dogs! Both the Dadz and I are delighted to be adding freshly-made cooked to order meals for the dogs. Human-grade food with all-natural ingredients – that is exactly as we would do it ourselves, but in a way that is making our lives easier, not more work.
We’ll be filling you in on how the dogs are enjoying their new food, what benefits it is providing to them (and all of us!), and more about the company and product in the weeks to come.
